BDO has kicked off 2025 with a senior appointment to its sustainability team. The accountancy and business advisory firm has appointed Hannah Routh to head up its ESG practice in the UK.
The UK’s environmental and sustainability consulting market has grown rapidly in the last decade, reaching £2.9 billion in 2022, according to recent research from Environment Analyst. With the UK looking to accelerate its transition to a zero-emission economy, this demand is set to ramp up even further over the next few years – hitting a forecast total of £4.9 billion by 2027.
As professional services firms position themselves to make the most of this potential boom, BDO has announced the appointment of Hannah Routh as its head of sustainability and ESG services practice. In this role, she will build and grow the firm’s suite of client advisory offerings, which currently includes ESG reporting and assurance, climate and carbon advisory, supply chain due diligence and sustainable finance.

Throughout her 28-year career Routh has focussed on sustainability and climate, and has held a variety of roles in Europe, Southern Africa and Asia. She brings 12 years of experience building and leading sustainability and climate businesses in the Big Four.
Most recently, Routh worked with Deloitte. There, she initially she led the sustainability and climate change advisory business for the Asia Pacific region, before returning to the UK in 2020 to take on a similar role. Earlier, she also spent five years with PwC in Hong Kong, where she also led on sustainability.
