Argos Packaging is now an official partner of Bio4Pack and will sell their Paddy Straw trays exclusively in the Netherlands. Patrick Gerritsen, director of Bio4Pack, says: “After several discussions with various parties, we found Argos to be by far the best partner to start increasing sales of the Paddy Straw trays. Argos operates very close to the growers and packers and has a more extensive sales force than Bio4Pack.”Miquel van den Ende, Patrick Gerritsen and Bernard van der Valk
The Paddy Straw packaging line is made from residual products from rice plantations. This material offers significant eco-friendly advantages. This is because the trays are made from rice straw, which is considered waste and would otherwise be incinerated. Avoiding this burning reduces harmful emissions and significantly lowers CO2 emissions. In addition, reducing waste burning helps improve air quality and protect groundwater levels, which is crucial for areas with limited water resources.
Social benefits
Besides the environmental benefits, this packaging line also offers social benefits. “By giving rice farmers in Asia—especially in Malaysia—a new source of income and creating jobs in the transport and manufacturing sectors, we are contributing to economic development and a better standard of living in the region. This makes our packaging an example of how sustainability can go hand in hand with social progress. I have worked in bioplastics for 25 years, and Paddy Straw is by far the most sustainable product we have. Together with Argos, we have the opportunity to start expanding this product within the AGF industry much faster,” Patrick said.
“Sustainability supported by entire organization”
He emphasizes that the way Argos is committed to sustainability was an important argument for entering into this partnership. “I have known Miquel van den Ende, sustainability manager at Argos, for a long time and know that this company has sustainability high on its agenda. That was a very important reason for choosing Argos. Sustainability is supported by the entire organization, and that was really the deciding factor. At Argos, they really put their money where their mouth is and are going to make a long-term commitment to sustainability.”
Changing market
Bernard van der Valk, commercial manager at Argos, is also looking forward to the cooperation: “We want to drive developments in the field of sustainability and increase sales in the market, thus addressing our customers’ issues. We are convinced that with this program that we will launch together with Bio4Pack, we will make a very nice step forward. The market is changing, and we want to move with it and be at the forefront of this.”
Miquel agrees: “The new European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation legislation is creating changes in the market for packaging and protective materials. We expect the market for these products based on renewable raw materials to grow even further in the coming years. In doing so, we not only want to respond to market demand but are also going to actively bring this sustainable solution to customers. Incidentally, this packaging line is not only fully compliant with PPWR legislation, but the product also fulfills a role on the social front. That makes the Paddy Straw trays truly unique. We need to make the market for this product bigger, and in this, we have really found each other.”
Together at Fruit Logistica and Biofach
At Fruit Logistica, the Bio4Pack product range will be presented at the Argos stand (hall 3.2, stand B14), and a week later, a representation of Argos will go to Biofach. Patrick: “The director-owner of our production company will also be present there. And later this year, a visit to Malaysia is planned, where a delegation from Argos can see both the production and the cooperative from which we buy the rice straw.”
Bernard concludes by saying, “There is a mutual commitment to do this together. That stimulates a seller. There is also a degree of flexibility from Bio4Pack and the manufacturer about new products to be developed. We approach the market with a standard range, but if a customer-specific format or item comes out, we don’t have to shy away from that. That flexibility and expertise is there.”
Argos Packaging will be at Fruit Logistica in hall 3.2, stand B14. Bio4Pack can be found at Biofach in hall 5, stand 111.For more information:
