Charleston Co. Airport Connector Road project receives key environmental approval – live5news.com

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – The county’s Airport Connect Road project has received a Finding of No Significant Impact determination and will advance into the right-of-way acquisition phase and toward the completion of final design plans after a lengthy environmental review period from the Federal Highway Administration.
This project involves the construction of a new roadway in the Charleston International Airport. The new five-lane road will help reduce traffic congestion that is caused by commuter traffic, airport-destined traffic, Boeing traffic and traffic associated with the North Charleston Coliseum/Performing Arts Center and the surrounding areas.
It will also provide increased traffic capacity to account for future economic growth in the area.
Charleston County Public Works Director Eric Adams said they are one step closer to providing safer traffic and a more efficient connection to and from the airport.
“This determination is a major milestone for the Airport Connector Road project and reflects years of careful planning, environmental study, and collaboration,” he said. “With this approval in hand, we’re one step closer to delivering critical infrastructure that will improve traffic flow, support economic growth, and provide a safer, more efficient connection to and from the airport.”
Construction is expected to start in the third quarter of 2026 and is expected to take approximately two years to complete.
