Crews from Alba’s Excavating, under contract with EES Environmental out of Portland, Ore., are currently working near the intersection of East Edison Avenue and South 7th Street in Sunnyside. The work involves installing monitoring well sample tanks as part of the ongoing environmental assessment and cleanup efforts related to the former Johnny’s Texaco site.
Crews are currently at work on a contaminated cleanup site at the corner of East Edison Avenue and South 7th Street, as part of a long-term environmental effort overseen by the Washington State Department of Ecology.
The site is the former location of Johnny’s Texaco, a gas station that operated from the 1940s until its closure in 2012. Underground fuel tanks and infrastructure were removed the same year, but environmental damage stemming from historic fuel releases was discovered decades earlier, in 1989.
Since then, cleanup efforts have focused on removing petroleum contamination from soil and groundwater.
The Department of Ecology updated the public cleanup site profile mid-2024, showing marked improvement. Two of the site’s most contaminated monitoring wells recorded dramatic drops in gasoline concentration levels — from over 50,000 micrograms per liter in March 2023 to below 800 last spring, nearing state cleanup standards for the first time.
According to Sunnyside Deputy Director of Public Works Hector Mejia, the current activity is being managed by EES Environmental, with Alba’s Excavating Construction handling the installation of additional monitoring well sample tanks. These tanks are essential for continued testing of groundwater in the area and are part of a broader remediation plan.
No completion date for the clean-up efforts has been announced for the project, but Ecology continues to monitor the progress and post updates on its public cleanup database.
