{KXLG – Milbank, SD} Firefighters from across the region recently participated in a Wildland Fire Course hosted by Milbank Fire and Grant County Emergency Management. The training, held last weekend from March 7th to 9th in Milbank, equipped local first responders with critical skills for combating wildfires.
According to a post from Grant County Emergency Management, firefighters from Andover, North Marshall, Britton, Big Stone City, Stockholm, South Shore, and Milbank Fire Departments attended the intensive course.
The Wildland Fire Course is designed to certify firefighters and provide them with the specialized training needed to safely and effectively manage wildland fires. Participants learned about fundamental fire behavior, the influence of weather conditions, the use of firefighting apparatus in wildland environments, and tactical operational strategies.
Upon completion of the course, the firefighters achieved FEMA National Qualification System (NQS) certification. They are “red carded,” enabling them to join wildland firefighting efforts throughout the state and potentially nationwide.
Grant County Emergency Management periodically offers this vital training to ensure local fire departments are well-prepared to handle the unique challenges of wildland firefighting and to contribute to broader firefighting efforts when needed.
