Rafal School Honored for Eco-Friendly Mobility Efforts – theleader.info

The Trinitario Seva School in Rafal has received the Gold Badge from Spain’s General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) in recognition of its ongoing commitment to promoting sustainable and eco-friendly travel through the STARS program (Sustainable Travel Accreditation and Recognition for Schools). This is the highest distinction awarded within the program and comes as the school completes its third consecutive year of participation.
The school’s principal, Maica Albero, welcomed Jacinto Vicente Manzanaro, Deputy Head of Traffic in Alicante, who visited Rafal to personally present the award. She was joined by Rafal’s Mayor Manuel Pineda and Councillor for Education Gabriel Valero.
Councillor Valero praised the initiative, highlighting the dedication of students, families, and staff:
“The school community has shown enthusiasm and responsibility, proving that it’s possible to get around in a healthy, environmentally friendly way.”
As part of this year’s activities, the school once again appointed student ambassadors, who play a key role in explaining the project to their peers and organizing the popular “bike bus” initiative.
Principal Maica Albero emphasized the collective effort behind the success:
“Our teachers, students, and families are not just participants—they’re actively involved in shaping and growing the project year after year.”
In his remarks, Jacinto Vicente Manzanaro commended the school for its dedication to values that extend beyond the classroom, such as sustainability and road safety. Mayor Manuel Pineda added his congratulations and underlined the broader impact of such programs:
“Initiatives like this encourage us to reflect on how we move through our towns and to prioritize walking or cycling for short trips—not just for the environment, but for our own health.”
