The Izaak Walton League focuses on environmental stewardship, emphasizing the importance of clean water, clear air, and responsible land management. The organization encourages members to appreciate nature and recognize the significance of wildlife and open spaces. More information about the national organization can be found at iwla.org.
Established in 1932, the Wayne County Chapter serves its members and the community in various ways. The chapter manages over 275 acres of woods and streams, making it a resource for outdoor activities such as hunting, hiking, fishing, and camping. It is also recognized as Tree Farm Number 1 in Ohio. The chapter provides facilities for Boy Scout and Girl Scout events, educational programs for school children, and a safe space for families to enjoy nature.
Additionally, the chapter features a shooting range, an archery range, and offers hunter safety classes. It hosts a free assisted hunt for limited mobility deer hunters on its grounds. Regular activities include monthly meetings with conservation programs, social events like an annual chicken barbecue and Christmas dinner, and seasonal activities such as a haunted forest.
The Richard B. Koehler Foundation Scholarship honors Richard Koehler, a science and math teacher at Triway High School for 36 years. Koehler was instrumental in launching the district’s computer program and initiated an energy, science and technology course that encouraged students to design alternative energy projects. He was also an active member of the Wayne County Chapter of the Izaak Walton League.
