Emory and Resilient Earth shows visitors how to help planetary health:
More than 22 Emory student mediators guide visitors through Science Gallery Atlanta’s Resilient Earth. The free exhibition, available now-April 30, 2025, at Northlake Mall, features 13 visual installations, some of which were led by Emory University professors. The exhibition is open from 11 a.m.-7 p.m., Wednesdays-Saturdays, and noon-6 p.m. Sundays through Wednesday, April 30.
Among the installations, “Sacred Breaths” offers visitors the experience of “forest bathing”—the ancient practice of immersing oneself in nature and polyphenol-rich air. “Sacred Breaths,” a greenhouse filled with native Georgia plants, is inspired by the work of Emory University’s Eri Saikawa, PhD, and Winship Distinguished Research Professor of Environmental Sciences. Saikawa’s lab measures air quality around metro Atlanta. Inside the greenhouse, lights change color in response to air quality.
Another example of faculty-led work is “Thermal Revelations,” a collaboration with Amanda Jacob, an Emory associate scientist in the biology department, and artist Craig Coleman. This installment features a table covered in thermal paint that responds to human touch and models of brains that change color based on proximity to body heat.
A different example includees “Floating Climatopias: Futuristic Designs for Flood-Resilient Settlements” is an extremely timely faculty-led piece. Inspired by the work of Emory Associate Professor Jola Ajibade, this diorama features visuals and real-life floating climatopias, developed in response to rising sea levels.
