The University of New Mexico Office of Sustainability hosts two town halls on main campus as part of its work to develop a Sustainability Strategic Plan.
The town halls will provide a forum for attendees to engage with Office of Sustainability staff, communicate what priority areas UNM should consider in the plan, and contribute ideas for actions that UNM can take related to environmental sustainability.
UNM’s commitment to sustainability was expressed as one of five goals in UNM’s 2040 plan, finalized in 2022. The town halls are part of a larger process launched by the UNM Office of Sustainability last fall to engage the campus community to derive 5–7 priority areas for the University’s sustainability efforts, intended to be completed by the end of 2025. The five-year roadmap will identify actions that will reduce the institution’s environmental impact, are financially sustainable, and reflect best practices in key areas such as energy use, water use, and waste management.
As part of this effort, the UNM Office of Sustainability will launch a campus-wide survey this spring to gather input from students, faculty, and staff.
“Sustainability is a shared responsibility, and we want to ensure that all voices across our university community are heard in this process,” said Anne Jakle, director of Sustainability. “Through this collaborative effort, we can develop a Sustainability Strategic Plan that reflects our collective vision for a more sustainable UNM.”
This strategic planning effort builds on extensive baseline data collection activities the Office of Sustainability undertook with campus partners over the last year, including the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) Silver designation and the release of the first institutional Greenhouse Gas Inventory in a decade.
These town hall events are part of a suite of Earth Month activities planned at UNM. Earth Month is a time to celebrate UNM's sustainability successes and take meaningful action to protect the planet.
