EUGENE, Ore. — Eugene School District 4J has prioritized sustainability as they prepare for the demolition of the old North Eugene High School campus, according to a spokesperson from 4J.
As part of their sustainability efforts, 4J said it relocated essential items to the new school building, including teachers’ classroom materials and library books. Additionally, reusable equipment in good condition, such as projectors, plumbing fixtures, door hardware and kitchen equipment, was salvaged for reuse in other 4J schools.
According to a spokesperson from 4J, other furniture and equipment was donated to other public agencies and schools. BRING Recycling, and similar local non-profits, was invited to take any additional materials.
Finally, 4J said the building was also used as a training site for local emergency response agencies. Those agencies took doors and frames from the school for future trainings.
Demolition of the old North Eugene High School is set to begin on May 28. A spokesperson for 4J said that the work will initially focus on the single-story section of the building, with larger-scale demolition to begin around May 30.
The new North Eugene High School opened its doors to students in fall 2023. 4J authorities said the 216,000-square-foot facility was made possible by the support of 4J voters who passed a bond in 2018.

The new North Eugene High School is the first new high school built in the area in over 50 years. 4J said it features nearly 50 general classrooms, specialized workspaces for career and technical education, a 425-seat auditorium, a library, and main and auxiliary gyms, supporting both student learning and community use.
