Four local high school graduates each received a $500 Dave Garrett Memorial Scholarship Award presented at Hidden Valley Sportsmen’s Club. Applicants must plan to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two- or four-year college, university or vocational/technical school, and major in agriculture, biology, wildlife, conservation, environmental science or other related field of study.
This year’s award recipients:
• Nolan Lapikas, a graduate of Sharpsville High School. He has been accepted to Westminister College with a field of study in biology to better understand ways to support, maintain and improve our ecosystem for the future.
• Josh Divens,a graduate of Sharpsville High School. He has been accepted to Penn State University-Shenango Campus with a field of study in conservation biology to promote sustainable resource management.
• Caden Buxton, a graduate of West Middlesex High School. He is planning to attend the University of Mount Union to study mechanical engineering focusing on developing ways to improve environmental pollution control.
• Lauren Aiello, a graduate of Sharpsville High School. She is accepted to the University of Pittsburgh with a field of study in pre-pharmacy in order to understand the problem of toxic pharmaceutical contamination of water and methods to prevent it.
The Dave Garrett Memorial Scholarship was conceived five years ago by Dave Garrett, an avid trap shooter and active lifetime member at Hidden Valley Sportsmen’s Club. His vision was to build a scholarship program to assist area youths who have chosen to further their education in conservation or science fields. Sadly, he passed away before the first scholarships were awarded.
This marks the fourth year of presenting scholarships. The Garrett family makes a generous donation to the scholarship fund, and Hidden Valley Sportsmen’s Club hosts the Dave Garrett Memorial Scholarship Trap Shoot with proceeds donated to the fund.
