Danville Utilities received a bronze medal award during the 2024 Governor’s Environmental Excellence Awards.
Danville Utilities was recognized for its Energy Efficiency Grant Program, implemented through the American Rescue Plan Act, and its Home$ave Rebate Program.
The awards ceremony, held earlier this month at the Environment Virginia Symposium, celebrated successful and innovative efforts to improve Virginia’s environment, according to a news release from the city.
“We are honored to receive this prestigious recognition from the Governor’s Environmental Excellence Awards,” Jason Grey, director of Danville Utilities, said in a prepared statement. “Our Energy Efficiency Grant Program and Home$ave Rebate Program are initiatives that deliver tangible benefits. Both the utility and customers benefit from system-wide energy efficiency.”
The Home$ave Rebate Program incentivizes homeowners to invest in energy-efficient equipment, offering rebates for qualifying products, including refrigerators, water heaters, windows, insulation, electric vehicle chargers and other items.

Homeowners can receive cash rebates in the form of checks for purchasing or performing tune-up services for qualifying equipment.
The Energy Efficiency Grant Program benefits customers by lowering their utility bills and helps Danville Utilities by curbing demand on the electrical grid and conserving natural resources.
The program leveraged $1 million from the American Rescue Plan Act to provide HVAC equipment and insulation to those most in need.
Through partnerships with organizations like the Danville Redevelopment and Housing Authority and Social Services, Danville Utilities identified eligible recipients and facilitated the completion of 57 home efficiency projects, according to the news release.
Twelve gold, silver and bronze medal awards were presented at the symposium. Recipients represented a broad range of sectors, including manufacturers, industry, non-profits, higher education and government entities, according to the news release.
“The Governor’s Environmental Excellence Awards recognize Virginia’s environmental leaders,” Gov. Glenn Youngkin said in a prepared statement. “The programs and projects implemented by those recognized demonstrate that balanced economic development and the protection of our environment go hand in hand.”
The annual awards are sponsored by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation.
