People, Planet, and Profit central to Minnesota Corn sustainability

The executive director of Minnesota Corn says people, planet, and profit are the pillars of sustainability for their grower members.
Adam Birr tells Brownfield those themes are evident in the association’s inaugural sustainability report.
“With those themes, we look through that with a Minnesota Corn lens and looking back to 2008 and all of our programs and kind of parceled our programs, our investments, our activities into those three buckets for Minnesota Corn.”
For people, he says county affiliates are making a positive impact on local communities.
“To the planet side, it’s our investment with Minnesota Corn Research and Promotion Council Checkoff into research programs, which that portfolio is nearly a $20 million investment in third-party research.”
Birr says profitability is probably the aspect of sustainability that gets overlooked the most, but investments that strengthen local communities or support on-farm research can’t happen if farmers aren’t profitable.
