The Materials: Vitale Barberis Canonico measures its sustainability progress – the-spin-off.com

Sustainability is central to Vitale Barberis Canonico’s strategy. This precious wool fabric manufacturer, one of the oldest woolen mills in the world with its 360-year history, has recently published its Sustainability Report 2023, which shows its main initiatives and progress at environmental, product and people levels.

On the environmental front, the company led by Alessandro Barberis Canonico has proceeded with an upgrade of the water purification plant and the expansion of the photovoltaic park, as well as the implementation of a second ultrafiltration line, with a membrane bioreactor, which has allowed it to raise the annual water recovery rate to 36%.

In the product area, the group continues to lead the way in the production of sustainable, high-quality textiles. It promotes biodiversity protection and social and environmental sustainability supporting the Wool Excellence Club of Australian supplier farmers, who dedicate their lives to the pursuit of excellence and animal welfare, to which the Wool Excellence Award is connected.

In support of “people,” the report lists the “Insieme” event, during which Vitale Barberis Canonico celebrated its 360th anniversary with its staff. In addition, they financed scholarships already since 2003, to support their employees’ children in their education.

“We are now focusing on interpreting the new European directives related to ESG issues, in order to confidently steer our company toward the challenges of impact reduction, while respecting a product culture and thanks to the passion and skills of more than 480 colleagues, recognized by those who choose our products around the world,” commented Lucia Bianchi Maiocchi, sustainability manager of the wool mill and representative of the 13th generation of the family at the helm of the company.

In 2023, Vitale Barberis Canonico posted “an excellent result in terms of volumes and value generated.” “The normalization of the flow of orders in the first half of the year, followed by a slowdown in the second,” they conclude from the Biella-based group, “made it possible to restore stocks and optimize delivery times. Sustainability remains a central element of the company’s strategy.”
