New State Programs Boost Innovation and Sustainability in Pennsylvania's Agriculture Sector – Franklin County Free Press

At a Butler County dairy farm, Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding highlighted how Pennsylvania’s agricultural sector would benefit from Governor Josh Shapiro’s new investments aimed at enhancing productivity, sustainability, and risk management in agriculture. These investments are part of the Agriculture Innovation and Conservation and Dairy Margin Coverage programs, designed to maintain Pennsylvania’s $132.5 billion agriculture industry as a national leader.
The $10 million Agriculture Innovation and Conservation Program will address agricultural and environmental challenges through new solutions, while the $5.6 million PA Dairy Margin Coverage Financial Assistance Program will subsidize farmers’ costs of enrolling in a federal program that compensates them when production costs drop below selected coverage levels.
During the visit, legislative support for these initiatives was evident, with several lawmakers including Senator Elder Vogel and Representative Emily Kinkead endorsing related bills. These bills support financial assistance and innovation in the agriculture sector and have received unanimous committee approval.
Thiele Dairy Farm, operated by the Thiele family, illustrates the benefits of such initiatives. The farm, which has adopted no-till and cover crop practices, has seen increased profitability through these conservation measures. The brothers also employ drone technology to monitor livestock and crops, showcasing the type of innovation the new state programs aim to support.
Additionally, Governor Shapiro has proposed new roles and expansions within the Department of Agriculture, such as a dairy development specialist and a $5 million expansion of the Pennsylvania Animal Diagnostic Laboratory System, to further aid the growth and sustainability of the state’s dairy farms.
These initiatives are part of Governor Shapiro’s broader Economic Development Strategy, which emphasizes the importance of agriculture alongside other key sectors like life sciences and technology for Pennsylvania’s future economic growth.
