Central birdwatchers can help environmental science – The Central App

Central’s birdwatchers can contribute to understanding environmental changes by participating in the New Zealand Garden Bird Survey from today.

The online survey opens today, June 29 and runs until July 7.

People need to count the number of birds they see or hear (both native and introduced species) using a tally sheet and submit their results on the NZ Garden Bird Survey.

You can count birds from inside or outside and you can participate more than once, you can even count them at your local park or school playground.

Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research researchers use supercomputers to distil the bird counts gathered by New Zealanders from more than 45,000 garden surveys since 2013, into easy-to-understand metrics.

This survey is the only one of its kind that informs policy makers, scientists, bird enthusiasts and other organisations nationwide who have an interest in the state of our garden birds and their environment.

The survey helps researchers understand how birds are coping with environmental challenges.

It also helps us build a long-term biodiversity dataset to understand the impact of climate change on ecosystems and biodiversity.

There are also competitions running, along with resources for teachers and schools on the website.
