Allentown will award $1,000-$5,000 “micro-grants” to young people leading projects that address climate change.
Allentown received funding for the grants through Bloomberg Philanthropies, an organization led by former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. It’s one of 100 cities across the world, including Accra, Ghana; Glasgow, Scotland; Montego Bay, Jamaica and New Orleans, Louisiana, that received $50,000 through Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Youth Climate Action Fund program.
“I’m thrilled that Bloomberg Philanthropies is investing in cities like Allentown to help us empower youth to take action on climate change,” Allentown Mayor Matt Tuerk said in a statement. “The Youth Climate Action Fund recognizes that young people can partner with local governments to build a more sustainable future, and that mayors play a key role in that work.”
The award will allow Allentown to distribute 15 to 25 micro-grants to people aged 15 through 24 who apply with a project idea. Projects could look like a tree planting initiative, recycling or waste reduction campaigns, or extreme weather preparedness programs, among other ideas, according to a news release from Allentown.
Projects must be completed by the end of 2024. If Allentown commits the entire grant amount within six months, it will receive an additional $100,000 to fund more climate projects.
The city has launched an online interest form for the program.
