BYD Launches SEAL U DM-i: Eco-Friendly SUV – The EV Report

BYD introduces the SEAL U DM-i, an innovative eco-friendly SUV ideal for long-range journeys. This new model, equipped with BYD’s Super DM (Dual Mode) Technology, promises a blend of electric efficiency and minimal fuel dependence, making it an environmentally friendly choice without sacrificing performance or comfort.

BYD, a global leader in New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), has unveiled its first Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) in Europe, the SEAL U DM-i. This SUV, part of the D-segment family, is designed to meet the needs of eco-conscious European customers. The SEAL U DM-i integrates BYD’s Super DM Technology, which emphasizes electric power and reduces fuel usage, offering enhanced energy efficiency and lower consumption.
Design and Features
The SEAL U DM-i in its Design trim features a four-wheel-drive system with two high-power electric motors and an 18.3 kWh BYD Blade Battery, complemented by a 1.5T hybrid engine. This combination ensures adaptability to various driving conditions. The Boost and Comfort trims come with a front-wheel-drive setup, each powered by a 1.5L hybrid engine and differing battery capacities—18.3 kWh for Boost and 26.6 kWh for Comfort.
Performance and Efficiency
The SEAL U DM-i offers two driving modes: EV mode for daily commutes and HEV mode for extended journeys. In EV mode, the vehicle operates purely on electric power, while in HEV mode, the hybrid engine supports the battery during acceleration. The innovative system ensures a seamless driving experience akin to that of a fully electric vehicle. The Design trim boasts a total system power of 238 kW and can accelerate from 0-62 mph in just 5.9 seconds.
Fuel Efficiency
The BYD SEAL U DM-i stands out for its ultra-low fuel consumption. The Boost version achieves an impressive 313.8 mpg (WLTP), while the Design version offers 235.4 mpg (WLTP). Additionally, the vehicle supports V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) technology, enabling it to power electrical devices.
Battery and Charging
Equipped with BYD’s Blade Battery technology, the SEAL U DM-i ensures safety, durability, and performance. The battery is made of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and features exceptional thermal stability. Charging capabilities include 11 kW 3-phase AC and 18 kW DC, with DC charging taking only 35 minutes from 30% to 80%.
Design and Interior
The SEAL U DM-i showcases BYD’s Ocean Aesthetics Design, characterized by an X-shaped front, U-shaped headlights, and a wide-body rear. The interior exudes a premium atmosphere with vegan leather upholstery, multi-color ambient lighting, and advanced technology features such as a rotatable 15.6-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch instrument panel.
Practicality and Connectivity
Designed for family use, the SEAL U DM-i offers ample legroom, a quiet cabin, and versatile cargo space. The SUV includes intelligent technology like the BYD app for remote control of various vehicle functions and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) for enhanced safety.
Availability
The BYD SEAL U DM-i will be available in Europe from June 2024, with UK deliveries starting in autumn 2024. The Comfort trim will be available later in 2024. Customers can choose from five colors: Delan Black, Time Grey, Snow White, Tian Qing (Blue), and Boundless Cloud. The vehicle comes with comprehensive warranties, ensuring peace of mind for buyers.
