Celebrating Earth Day 2024: Seattle City Light's Efforts Toward a Plastic-Free Future – Powerlines – seattle.gov

Today is Earth Day! The theme for this year is “Planet vs. Plastics.” At Seattle City Light, we want to reinforce our efforts towards environmental care and sustainability.
Our role goes beyond providing affordable and reliable power. We are part of the broader environmental stewardship effort with a focus on wildlife protection, environmental education, and supporting research into fish, wildlife, and climate. Our actions are informed by our environmental policy and collective efforts across Seattle. Part of these collective efforts involve ensuring we are making sustainable choices each day.
We follow the City of Seattle’s Sustainable Purchasing Policy in our pursuit of sustainability. This policy aligns with our values and integrates environmental stewardship, social equity, and fiscal responsibility into purchasing decisions. It emphasizes the need for reusing materials and supports buying and using products with post-consumer recycled content. These practices help ensure what we use and produce is sustainable and environmentally friendly.
We aim to use these practices in every facet of our operations: from decreasing consumption and preferring reusable and recyclable goods, to dedicating efforts towards minimizing our environmental footprint. We’re proud to work with the City of Seattle in prioritizing purchases that reflect our shared sustainability goals.
Plastic pollution poses a worldwide challenge. It endangers marine life and the health and wellbeing of our communities. We’re committed to confronting this challenge. Our efforts include the following:
Earth Day is a moment to reflect on our communal obligation to preserve our planet. At City Light, we believe even the smallest action can contribute to the fight against plastic pollution. We want to help shape a sustainable future for all.
We welcome you to join us in this endeavor. Together, we can make impactful changes toward reducing our environmental impact. By making sustainable choices, advocating for planet-friendly policies, and educating others on environmental responsibility, we can all help create a healthier, more sustainable world. Here’s to a future with less plastic and a commitment that goes beyond just Earth Day.
Seattle City Light was created by the citizens of Seattle in 1902 to provide affordable, reliable, and environmentally responsible electric power to the City of Seattle and neighboring suburbs.
