Leading grower-packer-marketer, Costa Group, has released its 2023 Sustainability Report. The report highlights Costa’s progress and achievements and the company’s continued commitment to developing sustainable solutions within the horticulture sector.
Internally, the group maintains a Sustainable Commercial Farming vision, which sets a clear path for how the business operates.
Key highlights from the report include commissioning five additional solar energy systems across Costa’s Australian operations; trialling and implementing new packaging products and technology including paper bunch bags for grapes and mandarins, and laser etching on hard-skinned fruit in place of non-recyclable price look-up stickers; and implementing an innovative data tracking system in citrus and avocado crops to improve forecasting and reduce fruit waste.
Costa also deployed a digital crop management system in Morocco to provide remote climate and environmental monitoring and donated 319 tonnes of fruit and vegetables to Foodbank Australia, the equivalent of 575,000 meals.
“Through all our activities, our people remain at the heart of our business, and we acknowledge and celebrate our diverse workforce,” the company said in a statement. “We also continue to support the communities in which we farm and work, through volunteering programs, sponsorship and support for education.”
