The Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) has been honored with the top sustainability award at the Business Travel Awards Europe, winning in the Achievement in Sustainability – Meetings & Events category. The prestigious awards ceremony took place at Grosvenor House in London on May 14th.
The judging panel praised EICC for its tangible results in reducing emissions and supporting customer sustainability efforts. They highlighted the venue’s collaboration with industry partners and its commitment to sharing knowledge and feedback to advance sustainability practices across the sector.
EICC’s CEO, Marshall Dallas, expressed pride in the recognition, stating, “We’re passionate about delivering impactful business events, but being concerned with the inherent environmental effects we continuously evolve our Step Change sustainability programme, which is aimed at minimizing our impact on the planet, and we’re really proud to have this work recognized by IMEX-EIC.”
This award is one among several accolades EICC has received this year, reflecting its dedication to sustainability in the meetings and events industry. At IMEX Frankfurt, EICC was a finalist in the IMEX-EIC Innovation in Sustainability Award, alongside prominent organizations like TED and the Water Environment Federation, and was the only venue among the final nominees.
Other notable recognitions include the SEAL Business Award in the Sustainable Service category, Net Zero Champion at the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce Awards, and Inspiring Champion at the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce Awards for its partnership with RSPB Scotland.
Marshall Dallas emphasized the significance of these achievements, noting, “To achieve a mix of global and local recognition for our environmental credentials means a lot to myself and the team – and we’ve only been able to reach this point by putting sustainability front and center of everything we do.”
The EICC reported record revenue of £12.8 million and a record profit of £2.6 million for the year ending December 31, 2023, underscoring its successful integration of sustainability into its business model.

Africa’s Big 7

Recognizing and honoring African expertise in the food and beverage domain stands as a primary focus for Africa’s Big 7. Come 2024, the foremost gathering in this industry, Africa’s Big 7, will present four exciting highlights, providing emerging talents with a stage to display their abilities. These include The Game of Chefs, the Global Pizza Challenge, the National Burger Challenge, and the South African Bakers Challenge. Furthermore, the event will delve into the obstacles and prospects within a sector projected to exceed $1 trillion by 2030.
“Over three days, attendees can network with professionals, thought leaders and buyers at an event designed to connect trends and insights to real-world situations,” says Margaret Peters, Event Manager: Food & Hospitality at dmg events.
“Here, companies can have authentic conversations about pressing concerns affecting the industry. One of the most relevant and pressing themes is, of course, sustainability. Conversations around food insecurity, sustainable approaches to waste, realistic steps towards net zero, and sustainable growth focus on realistic steps companies can make to transform the sector and its impact.”
The upcoming event will delve into the significance of embracing food trends, both locally and globally, to create innovative culinary experiences. We’ll explore the driving forces behind new ingredients and flavors, as well as how sustainability is being reinforced through ingredient sourcing and utilization. Discussions will encompass retail mega trends influencing consumer behaviors, the future of retail in South Africa, innovations in private label despite disruptions, the rising trend of plant-based foods, and opportunities within the township economy.
Additionally, in 2024, Africa’s Big 7 will debut the inaugural Game of Chefs, proudly sponsored by Econo Foods as the title sponsor and Unilever as a silver sponsor. This culinary competition is tailored for aspiring young chefs, where 12 teams will showcase their culinary prowess, competing for a substantial cash prize. The Game of Chefs aims to inspire and nurture emerging culinary talent, providing them with a platform for visibility and invaluable experience.
“Unilever Food Solutions is all about supporting, inspiring and progressing chefs, especially the development of young chefs who will be instrumental in delivering trends and inspiring other chefs,” says Yonela Motloung, Unilever Food Solutions Marketing Lead.
“Attendees of the Game of Chefs cook-off can look forward to enjoying 3 course meals with iconic Unilever flavours, which will add a kick to the experience. And, we will be bringing in our chefs to run the competition, providing the competitors with insights and advice they can use to grow in their careers.”
When it comes to reshaping the food and beverage value chain, Africa’s Big 7 delves into critical sectoral challenges while also spotlighting exciting trends in flavor, strategies, and advancements. This event offers attendees a multifaceted experience conducive to networking and in-depth discussions. For exhibitors, it presents a chance to engage with key decision-makers and forge valuable connections. As Gabi Davies, Sales and Marketing Assistant at exhibitor Tri Star Foods says: “There’s a lot of positive feedback in terms of reaching new customers at the event and we’re looking forward to presenting our product range to potential customers.”
The 2024 Advisory Board, consisting of esteemed individuals from prominent organizations, fortifies the event, ensuring it resonates with the real-world challenges and expectations of the sector. This year’s board includes Pilisa Matyholo, Group Category Manager for Food at the Spar Group, and Ceri Coxon, Head of Trade and Customer Experience for Food at Woolworths, representing the Retail sector. At IMEX 2024, IAEE’s Marsha Flanagan led a panel of industry leaders in a bold discussion about the events industry’s failures and blind spots. They dissected the reasons behind failed events, challenging traditional notions of success and failure.
Understanding Event Failures
The panel introduced the Four Pillars of Failure, a framework mapping common pitfalls:
1. The empathy void: Failing to understand and cater to attendees’ needs.
2. Lack of vision: Repeating stale event formats without innovation.
3. Lack of dialogue: Ignoring insights from other industries and diverse voices.
4. Limited chit-chat-list enterprise: Focusing too narrowly on specific stakeholders.
The discussion highlighted the need for a cultural shift that views failure as a learning opportunity rather than a source of shame. As one panelist noted, “We’re not curing cancer. Let’s reframe and take it down a notch. Failure is just an opportunity to learn and iterate.”
Cultivating a Learning Mindset
To foster this mindset, the panelists emphasized open dialogue, data-driven decision-making, and stepping outside the industry’s echo chamber. An audience member pointed out the difficulty of understanding failures that aren’t trackable, underscoring the importance of transparency.
The panelists encouraged attendees to engage with the Four Pillars of Failure by taking selfies with the posters, sharing them on social media with #IMEX24, and using the diagnostic tool to assess their organizations’ blind spots.
The Path to Event Excellence
The session concluded with a clear message: the path to success in the events industry is paved with lessons from failure. Embracing a culture of transparency, empathy, and continuous improvement allows for transformative experiences.
Event professionals are challenged to confront their blind spots and learn from their failures. As demonstrated by the panelists, the rewards of this journey are worth the risk. The journey to event excellence starts here.
