Nearly 10,000 people have decided on the winning paint design for the new Green Line Type 10 trolley cars that will enter service for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority in the coming years.
Riders were invited to select one of three exterior paint designs for the new cars through an online survey. MBTA employees were also asked to provide their feedback.
The MBTA says the winning design is Option 3, featuring a green and dark gray paint scheme along the body of the vehicle, green doors, and a white and navy blue lower running strip.
“Ensuring that we engage with riders and incorporate their feedback is critical in everything we do,” MBTA General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng said. “The fact that we heard directly from thousands of riders demonstrates the importance of these new Green Line cars to the public.”

The MBTA said lessons learned from previous vehicle projects are also being incorporated as part of the design process.
Last year, the MBTA said the new Type 10 cars will replace the Type 7 and Type 8 trolleys, some of which have been rolling since 1986.
The transit agency said the supercars will be in design for several more years before pilot vehicles are introduced to the system.
The MBTA expects a mock-up of the Green Line Type 10 supercar will be available next year for riders and the public to visit and offer their feedback.
Four pilot cars are expected to be delivered in spring 2026, and the first production vehicle will arrive about one year later. From there, the plan calls for vehicles to be delivered at a rate of two per month through spring 2031.
