I&S Employee Newsletter – April 2024 | Infrastructure and Sustainability – University of Colorado Boulder

Dear Infrastructure and Sustainability team,
Thanks to everyone who submitted comments during the Climate Action Plan public comment period last month. Our CAP steering committee is incorporating your thoughtful feedback into a final version that will be released during the Campus Sustainability Summit at the end of this month.
The campus is starting budget conversations based on projections of smaller graduating high school classes in future years. We expect to see lower student enrollment numbers beginning in 2027. I’ve gotten some questions about how this might impact our department budgets. We are preparing now for potential budget impacts. Please know that these financial changes are campuswide and, like other departments, we want to be thoughtful with our next steps. Visit the Transformation and Fiscal Resilience FAQ page for more information.
Finally, I want to let you know that our I&S mission, vision and values are being redeveloped. The VCIS leadership team has been crafting a new mission statement. Once that is complete, we will revise our vision and values accordingly. We are collaborating with leaders from units within I&S to get feedback on this content and we look forward to sharing it with you.
With gratitude,
Chris Ewing, vice chancellor for infrastructure and sustainability
If you’re looking to budget better or make retirement a reality, there’s something for you during Financial Fitness Month! Join WorkWell and Human Resources on campus and virtually for informational sessions on retirement, wills, trusts, planning for college and more this April.
If you would like to keep the same benefit choices, no action is required and you will be automatically re-enrolled. If you want to make a change, we’ll provide many ways to learn about and compare plans. Read more about Open Enrollment.
Open enrollment information sessions with Employee Services and I&S Human Resources are an opportunity to learn more about your benefits, including health insurance, dental/vision, life insurance and more.
Effective April 1, Anthem members will be able to fill maintenance medications at Kroger-affiliated pharmacies such as King Soopers and City Market pharmacies. Read more about Anthem and Kroger pharmacies.
The Sustainability Council invites the CU Boulder community to attend an in-person sustainability open forum during their upcoming meeting on April 12 from 9 to 10:10 a.m. in Kittredge Central Multipurpose Room B.
After introductions from the council, individuals will be invited to ask questions and propose sustainability ideas beyond the Climate Action Plan (which is being led by a different group). Comments should be kept to three minutes or less to allow for the maximum number of participants.
University Staff: CU allows full-time University staff to keep a maximum of 44 days (or 352 hours) of vacation within a fiscal year (July 1 to June 30). If you exceed this maximum, you must take vacation before June 30, or you will lose it.
Classified Staff: Maximum accruals for Classified staff members in regular appointments are based on months of service. See the Classified Staff Leave Policies chart for full details.
All staff should double check leave balances now, and make plans to use any hours of vacation time over the maximum allowable accrual time before the July 1 deadline. As always, vacation leave requests are subject to the approval of your supervisor; don’t wait until June to put in your leave requests. If you have any questions regarding vacation leave, please contact your supervisor.
I&S allows volunteer hours to be granted from work to serve the community in various ways. Volunteer time is credited on a fiscal year basis (July 1 through June 30). Some examples of this service may be as a volunteer worker at a charitable organization or attending a school function for one’s child or relative.
Check out the CU Boulder holidays for 2024, and please note that starting this year, Juneteenth will be an annual holiday (observed this year on Wednesday, June 19).
How long have you been working at CU? This March will be five years working at CU.
What is your favorite thing to do outside of work? Listening to and playing live music is my favorite thing to do outside of work. I enjoy playing the piano, guitar, banjo, mandolin and ukulele.
Tell us something that might surprise us about you. I am an avid homebrewer and a national beer judge. I have also brewed craft beer professionally – most recently in Christchurch, New Zealand!
What do you love about CU Boulder? I get to work with so many incredible people in all sorts of different capacities!
What is your favorite type of music? I don’t know that I can pick one genre, but bluegrass, rock and blues are regularly frontrunners on my playlists.
Since Chris joined the maintenance team he has strived to become one of the hardest workers. He shows his dedication to his job by showing up first and always getting involved with everything going on. Also since his switch, he has become a real asset to the department. Chris has taken the time to share his previous operational experience and also continue to grow and learn.
Lei is our graduate student bus driver, and one of our most reliable employees. Lei walked into our office one day looking for a job, and we couldn’t believe he already had a commercial drivers license. Not only is Lei reliable, he is very much loved by the entire staff and the students. Our office would like to honor him and show how proud we are of him for being a GREAT student as well as a cherished employee. Lei never has had a complaint or an accident with a Buff Bus. Lei is graduating in May, and we hope he still visits us once in a while… it’s been our pleasure knowing Lei Qisheng.
This month, the American Society of Safety Professionals is focusing on eye wellness and protection. This is a reminder for our staff whose jobs involve safety eyewear personal protective equipment (PPE) to always wear their safety glasses. During our recent FACMAN safety committee meeting, we discussed the benefits of sharing these safety topics with our families and friends. And of course remember to wear your sunglasses while on campus as you enjoy the Boulder sunshine!
More information on our FacMan prescription safety glasses program can be found on the Safety SharePoint Resources page.
The FM safety committee meets the third Tuesday of every month to discuss general safety concerns, review safety reports and on-the-job injuries and recommend training needs and resources. If you are interested in attending a meeting or bringing an issue or idea that is safety related, please reach out to your area representative on the FM safety committee or contact our Safety Specialist Don Fitzpatrick.
