Massachusetts Environmental Police seized over 3,000 pounds of illegal haddock from an offshore dragger in New Bedford over the weekend.
Environmental police measure all haddock that comes through Massachusetts, and much of the fish the dragger brought to a processor was below the legal size of 16 in., the department said in a Facebook post Monday. The fish was donated to various food pantries.
An environmental police colonel told the New Bedford Light that he was inspecting a processing plant when he noticed the undersized haddock on an assembly line. He ordered the plant to temporarily stop operations as he measured the fish and ultimately determined that about 3,000 of the 11,000 total pounds of fish were too small to be sold.
Authorities are not releasing the name of the dragger or the processing plant until charges are filed, the New Bedford Light reported. No further information has been released.
