North Florida Sewing Center hosts 1st ‘Sustainable Sunday’ – WCJB

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) -The North Florida Sewing Center started a new program called “Sustainable SUndays” which take place one Sunday a month.
Leaders of the non-profit are trying to clean up the environment one stitch at a time. They say they are trying to figure out ways to replace every day items with things that are reusable, longer lasting and better for the environment. This time they made paperless towels with cloth to replace paper towels.
“All that paper product is going to the landfill, and eventually we’re going to run out of landfill space, so we’re trying to just get ahead of the game,” shared vice president of the North Florida Sewing Center Dee Dugger.
They also make quilts for Habitat for Humanity, make pet beds, and items for Shands as well. Their goal is to be a zero waste facility.
“Our ancestors recycled everything, and then we got into a world where it was convenient to have paper towels, or paper diapers, or whatever, and now we’re trying to get back to our roots of being recyclers,” Dugger said.
Their next event is on July 19 where they will use t-shirts to make reusable grocery bags.
