NRC seeks input on environmental review of Palisades Nuclear Plant restart plan – WNDU

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. (WNDU) – There’s been a lot of talk lately about a request to reopen the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant in Covert Township… and a lot of listening.
A team from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has been in southwest Michigan gathering public input.
It’s part of the start of a comprehensive look at the environmental impact a restart of the plant would have.
“We’ve been here throughout the week since about Sunday in this area visiting with community leaders, with aid organizations, with elected officials, and tonight we’re grateful to have the opportunity to visit with the public,” said the NRC’s Daniel Barnhurst.
The panel held an open house and community meeting at the Mendel Center in Benton Harbor Thursday night.
Every effort is being made to ensure that the environmental review is as thorough as possible.
“Some of the examples are ground water, surface water, air quality, land use, aquatic and terrestrial ecology,” Barnurst said. “Another important aspect is the impact on the socioeconomics or environmental justice, the vicinity due to the restart of the plant.”
The Palisades plant closed in May of 2022. Never before has a decommissioned nuclear power plant in the U.S. been recommissioned, so this would be a first.
The environmental review of a proposed restart will likely be complete in June or July of next year.
