From Tuesday, April 9 to Thursday, April 11, Pepperdine University will host the eighth annual Climate Calling Conference, where students, faculty, and community members gather to explore climate change and the moral calling to protect the future of planet earth.
The multiday event includes a diverse array of activities to engage the University community. Throughout the week, the Seaver College campus will host an Earth Day Fair, student research presentations, an eWaste drive, and a keynote address by Los Angeles Times reporter Rosanna Xia. These events each address a number of topics––species extinction, drought, flooding, marine impacts, sustainable food practices, and environmental justice and activism––related to the consequences of climate change. By featuring the voices of both students and experts, the Climate Calling Conference creates a dynamic setting where a global and pressing issue can be investigated.
The eighth annual Climate Calling Conference is sponsored by the Malibu Library Speaker Series, the Office of the Vice Provost, and the Center for Sustainability. Further details about each day’s events appear below.
Climate Calling 2024 Keynote Address: Lessons on Climate Storytelling from a Los Angeles Times Reporter
Thursday, April 11 • 7 PM Keynote Address • Elkins Auditorium
Los Angeles Times reporter Rosanna Xia will break down how environmental journalists today are writing about climate change, with lessons learned on how to turn complex issues into memorable and deeply felt stories. Xia will also introduce her new book, California Against the Sea, and share insights from her award-winning reporting on sea level rise.

Earth Day Fair:
Tuesday, April 9 • 11 AM–2 PM • Joslyn Plaza
The Center for Sustainability is hosting its annual Earth Day celebration in the heart of the Malibu Campus, where students, faculty, and staff come together to celebrate our beautiful planet with informational booths from environmental organizations inside and outside of Pepperdine.
eWaste Drive:
Wednesday, April 10 • 7:30 AM–3 PM • All Pepperdine University Campuses
The Center for Sustainability and Environmental Health and Safety are partnering with ER2 to collect and recycle, or appropriately dispose of eWaste items, including computers, laptops, televisions, cell phones, CDs, DVDs, printers, batteries, cords, and gaming systems.
Climate Calling 2024 Student Research Presentations:
Wednesday, April 10 • 3– 5 PM • Biggers Family Courtyard (next to Elkins Auditorium)
Student researchers present academic posters summariziing their work. The presentations are a requirement of a spring semester course that includes a climate change component.
