Visitors to Pine’s municipal building will notice an abundance of signs and informational materials that promote recycling, pollution reduction and other environmentally friendly practices.
People in Harrisburg have noticed, too.
The township is a recipient of the Governor’s Award for Local Government Excellence, one of 13 municipalities in Pennsylvania to earn the honor. Pine is the only municipality to be recognized in the category of Environmental Wellness Initiatives.
On April 10, township staff members and elected officials attended a ceremony at the State Museum for the presentation of awards.
“With help from their citizens, Pine Township created an implementation strategy so successful it has been used in many other areas, such as parks and open space planning, land development management, maintenance operations, education, programming and event planning,” the program for the ceremony states.
The township’s Environmental Advisory Council, which meets the third Tuesday of each month, instituted a series of speakers and workshops, partnering with organizations including the Pennsylvania Resource Council, North Area Environmental Council and Latodami Nature Center in North Park.
On May 1, Latodami assistant naturalist Leah Fulton will give a presentation on “Bringing Nature to Your Backyard,” focusing on learning the difference between invasive and native plants, how to build wildlife houses and habitats, and the best features to add to yards to support local animals and the environment.
The event starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Pine Community Center. Register at twp.pine.pa.us/215/Environmental-Programs.
Other Pine initiatives, according to the township’s website, include:
• Purchase of 18 acres for land and wetland conservation, passive recreation through the creation of trails through the preserve, and education.
• Recycling efforts for materials such as glass, cardboard, small electronics and Christmas lights.
• Stormwater management retrofitting to fulfill the requirements of the state Department of Environmental Protection’s MS4 program, and to reduce flooding and sediment pollution.
• Creation of connector and nature trails.
• Planting and reforestation efforts.
• Street cleanup efforts.
The township also is holding its first-ever Earth Day Celebration on April 27 at the community center.
Each year, one week is designated by the state Legislature as Local Government Week, honoring the dedication of local officials and encouraging residents to learn how local government functions.
During the week, the Governor’s Center for Local Government Services has made a tradition of hosting a Local Government Day celebration, featuring the presentation of the Governor’s Awards for Local Government Excellence.
“As a former county commissioner, I know firsthand how our city and local governments are where the rubber meets the road: working directly with the people in your communities to provide essential services, from answering calls for help in 911 dispatch centers, to protecting the residents in your communities, to helping your most vulnerable neighbors during challenging times,” Gov. Josh Shapiro says in the program for the celebration.
