Collins Aerospace recently announced that it was upgrading its FlightHubTM electronic flight folder (EFF) solution to include its Flight Profile Optimization (FPO) solution.
Collins’ FPO solution uses real-time weather, air traffic, and other relevant data to analyze flight path options and make flight path recommendations to flight crews and dispatchers. These recommended flight paths are often shorter, more direct, or tailored to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions.
According to Jon Merritt, Associate Director, Flight Deck Solutions at Collins Aerospace, “…[the] FPO solution is an application using advanced, real-time decision-making tools to identify the most efficient flight paths between a departure airport and a destination airport. The system…aggregates data from multiple disparate data sources…and analyzes them to make flight path recommendations that are delivered directly to the pilot’s EFF.”
The addition of FPO to the FlightHub EFF was announced at the Singapore Air Show – one of the world’s most respected commercial aviation events. The announcement came at a perfect time for the commercial aviation industry, which is facing two significant challenges:
The first of these two challenges – cost savings – is even more significant following the unfortunate grounding of some aircraft. This situation is resulting in considerable disruption and lost revenue as flights are canceled while fleets are inspected.
The second of these challenges – sustainability – becomes increasingly important as the industry steadily approaches 2050 – the year in which the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and its member airlines committed to being carbon neutral.
As a recent Executive Brief on the solution explains, FPO can help commercial airlines increase profitability and decrease carbon emissions. It accomplishes this by eliminating inefficient flight paths, which can decrease the amount of jet fuel used and reduce the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere.
Today’s commercial airlines are working intently to decrease operating expenses and improve profitability while simultaneously taking steps to decrease carbon emissions and increase sustainability. Using FPO to reduce waste and increase the efficiency of their flight paths is an easy and effective way to accomplish their goals.
