Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) has kicked off 2024 with substantial growth in both passenger numbers and freight volumes, reinforcing the rail network’s vital role in the Kingdom’s transport infrastructure and its commitment to sustainable development.
1. Impressive Passenger and Freight Growth
In the first quarter of 2024, SAR witnessed a significant 23% increase in passenger traffic, with over 2.7 million passengers choosing rail travel. This surge is attributed to the reliable and efficient service offered across SAR’s key routes: the East Train, North Train, and the high-speed Haramain Express.
Freight services are also on the rise, with a 9% increase in transported goods, totaling 6.34 million tons. This growth not only supports the industrial sector but also contributes to environmental sustainability by reducing over 500,000 truck trips on the nation’s roads, thus decreasing carbon emissions and preserving road infrastructure.
2. Enhancing Infrastructure and Capacity
Under the leadership of CEO Dr. Bashar bin Khaled Al-Malik, SAR is making significant strides towards expanding its service capabilities. A notable development is the integration of the logistics zone with the second industrial city in Dammam into the railway network, linking major ports and enhancing the supply chain’s efficiency across the Kingdom.
To accommodate the rising demand, SAR has signed a deal with Swiss manufacturer Stadler to add 10 modern passenger trains to the East Train network. This expansion will double the annual passenger capacity to over 3.8 million and introduce direct Express trips between Riyadh and Dammam, further boosting the appeal of rail travel.
3. Pioneering Projects on the Horizon
Looking to the future, SAR is preparing to launch the ‘Desert Dream’ train, a luxury travel experience and the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa. Scheduled to begin by the end of 2025, this project symbolizes SAR’s innovative approach to enhancing the travel experience in the region.
SAR’s collaboration with the Saudi Authority for Industrial Cities and Technology Zones (MODON) and the National Industrial Development and Logistics Program (NIDLP) marks a strategic move to bolster the industrial sector’s supply chains, facilitating access to local and global markets.
