Schiphol Airport Retail hails latest milestones on sustainability journey – The Moodie Davitt Report

NETHERLANDS. Schiphol Airport Retail, the partnership between Schiphol Group and Gebr. Heinemann, has hailed the latest steps on its journey towards creating a more sustainable retail environment at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol.
Initiatives include:
Waste Reduction: The retailer has been offering free water refill after halting selling plastic bottles in all stores last year. As reported, SAR and sustainable reusable water bottle retailer Dopper teamed up to offer passengers free water in Lounge 2 in 2023.
The company noted: “We are implementing robust waste management systems and aiming for a zero-waste retail environment, with projects like ‘Less waste same taste from Royal Schiphol Group.”
Eco-Friendly Products: Prioritising environmentally-friendly products with minimum carbon footprints.
Sustainable Partnerships: Collaborating with partners and suppliers who share the same environmental values, such as in-store fit-out with creative agency Levanto.
The design and the materials used in signage play a pivotal role, said SAR, including eco-friendly materials such as recycled plastics, bamboo and other sustainable resources. SAR said: “These materials not only reduce the environmental footprint but this also sends a clear message to consumers about the retailer’s commitment to sustainability.
“Customisable signage is also a super-smart way of maximising customer-facing impact while reducing material wastage, and more importantly it can help in reducing manpower and the disruption to the store.

“The messages on signage are equally crucial. As a retailer we use this platform to educate and engage consumers about environmental issues. Messages promoting the use of reusable bags, encouraging the purchase of sustainable products, or highlighting the environmental benefits of locally sourced goods can inspire travellers to make more eco-friendly choices. Additionally, storytelling elements can be incorporated.”
Levanto Account Director Eef Luchies said: “As a creative company we were challenged to really think outside the box by the Marketing team from Schiphol Airport Retail. All our knowledge of sustainable processes and the use of eco-friendly materials such as PET Felt and VLAS will lead to less waste and more re-use for Schiphol Airport Retail.”

Innovation and Technology: Leveraging technology to enhance sustainability efforts.
Introducing electronic shelf labels (ELS) to reduce paper use and enhance price accuracy contributes to sustainability goals. SAR said: “Schiphol Airport Retail is the leader taking this step airside to reduce waste and takes next steps in the sustainable world, in which other business partners start following our footsteps.”
The retail company said it aims to lead by example and “ensure every aspect of our operations contributes positively to the environment and to our community. We understand that achieving these goals requires dedication, collaboration and a continuous willingness to embrace change.” ✈
