Sustainability efforts in Mankato – KEYC

MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) – As Minnesota’s climate continues to change, Mankato city officials are looking into a local plan in addition to state efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change.
The Mankato city council authorized city manager Susan Arntz to apply for a grant from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency that could help city leaders create a local climate action plan.
“There is a lot the city of Mankato has been doing around sustainability and climate actions, we just don’t have a plan that focuses those efforts.”
Should Mankato get approval for the grant, it would allow them to create an official action plan, but this can take weeks or even months.
While Mankato works on the grant, independent groups continue to contribute to sustainability efforts, such as the South Central Minnesota Clean Energy Council, which connects climate experts to educational settings.
“We’ve been doing a lot of advocacies especially with the city of Mankato and some surrounding communities to start thinking about climate actions.”
The Council has helped communities with climate action plans and knows how they get put together.
“Really hearing from people to see what their concerns are and then taking that information to say here are some steps we can take to address that.”
Sustainability is a continuous journey that is more about learning to be sustainable as part of our daily lives versus an additional step to take.
