'Techxpo' projects show potential to impact environmental future in Butte – Nonstop Local

BUTTE, Mont. — The items on display at Montana Tech’s annual ‘Techxpo’ on Thursday were more than just for show.
The 78 projects showcased are prime of student ingenuity and tangible difference-making in the community, a culmination of two semesters worth of development for Techxpo’s judges to assess.
And one of the most impressive exhibitions is tackling a timely issue.
As Butte-Silver Bow focuses on soil cleanup after finding contaminants in areas like the Stodden Park playground, a group of six environmental and mechanical engineers created a remote-control ground drone that can cleanse contaminated soil in previously inaccessible places.
“This is intended for mine waste sites that are hard to reach with traditional remediation methods,” environmental engineer Johannes Chandler said. “It’s intended for sites that are high in the mountains, or where human safety just isn’t as possible.”
Now, these student could have put their heads together and made any old project, but the chance to create something with a such a potentially significant effect on their own community is what makes all the work worthwhile.
“Making an impact is the reason I went into my degree,” mechanical engineer Giovanna Luciano said. “Being able to have such a direct one, especially in a place where I’ve been lucky to live in the past four years, feels amazing.”
Though Techxpo marks the end of their work, the students behind this project are eager for future Orediggers to take their findings even further and make the Mining City that much better of a place to call home.
If you couldn’t catch the brilliance in person, you’ll still be able to view all 78 projects later this week on the Techxpo website.
