Swiss has continued to lead the way in product innovation, with a new ready to eat line of vegetables and beans that hit grocery shelves about a month ago.
The 2023 Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturing Association’s (TTMA) Innovator of the Year winner has again wowed consumers with its tetra-packaged line which includes sweet kernel corn, mixed vegetables, baked beans, red kidney beans, chick peas channa, black beans and lentils.

Swiss Marketing Executive Avionne Lennard explained what led to the company ditching the can and eliminating the need to fumble with a can opener.
“Satisfying our consumers’ needs and demands is critical for us and while we saw the opportunity to expand our portfolio with the addition of vegetables and beans we also acknowledged the fact that our consumers needed a more convenient and eco-friendly solution so we decided to “THINK OUTSIDE THE CAN!” and introduced our line in Tetra Pak. Tetra Pak is an eco-friendly packaging that benefits both retailers, and consumers,” Lennard said.

She said the boxed product comes with a number of benefits over traditional canned beans and vegetables.
“The tetra’s lower weight, space efficiency and impact on shelf is appealing to retailers, and for the consumers the packaging is practical, modern, and safe. The tetra packaging for our Swiss vegetables and beans is also made from recyclable materials, which is great for our environment,” Lennard said.
The vegetables and beans have a shelf life of two years, however, once opened, like any other opened perishable food, it should be kept refrigerated and consumed within three to four days.
“The response from consumers have been overwhelmingly positive and (the products) have been described as a game changer by both retailers and the public.
We’ve gotten feedback praising the innovation, convenience and the practicality of the packaging and the fact that it is eco-friendly, we also received high praises of the quality and taste of the product,” she said.
“Consumers are buzzing and are excited to ditch the can openers and they can’t stop talking about the sweet kernel corn which is fresh, sweet and crunchy,” Lennard added.
When asked about plans to introduce larger sizes of the beans and mixed vegetable packages, or to expand the line to include more products, Lennard joked that Swiss isn’t ready to spill the beans on what’s next.
However, she said consumers can rest assured that the company is always working behind the scenes to introduce new flavours and delights.
Swiss is no stranger to being an innovation trendsetter, as the company was the first in the region to transition from bottle when it introduced the Spouch flexible packaging for condiments.

Last year, it copped the TTMA’s Innovator of the Year Award for the launch of Swiss Mambo The Everything Sauce, which is a spicy/sweet tamarind flavour sauce that can be used as a dip, a topping, to grill, marinate, stew.
Lennard thanked customers for embracing the change and for encouraging the company to constantly push its boundaries.
The new ready to eat line is available at supermarkets nationwide and retails for around $8.99 per item.
