{KXLG – Watertown, SD} The Watertown wastewater treatment facility is experiencing high flows, prompting a call to action for residents. The public is encouraged to take specific measures to prevent clear water from being discharged into the sanitary sewer system.
Residents are urged to ensure that all clear water flows are not directed into the sanitary sewer system. Clearwater, such as rainwater or other non-contaminated sources, should be diverted from the sewer.
Sump pump water mustn’t be discharged into the sanitary sewer. Instead, homeowners should direct sump pump water to their yards or other acceptable locations. Doing so can preserve valuable sanitary sewer capacity and protect homes and the environment from sewage discharges.
Violating these guidelines could result in criminal penalties. Suppose individuals are found discharging unpolluted water or sump pump discharges into the sanitary sewer outside the temporary, seasonal variance period or without proper written authorization. In that case, they may face Class 2 Misdemeanor charges. These penalties include up to 30 days in jail and a fine of up to $500. Each day of noncompliance constitutes a separate violation.
Excessive sump pump discharge into the sanitary sewer system risks flooding basements for the homeowner and neighboring properties. Preventing this excess flow is crucial to maintaining sewer system integrity.
The public’s assistance in eliminating clear water flow into the sanitary sewer is greatly appreciated. By following these guidelines, residents can contribute to the overall well-being of our community.
