Hamad International Airport (DOH) reinforces its dedication to environmental sustainability by actively participating in the United Nations World Environment Day 2024. This year, the airport celebrates significant achievements in waste management, water conservation, and decarbonization.
Hamad International Airport is on track to meet its 2030 goal of reducing carbon emissions by 30%, aligning with its environmental sustainability objectives.
Since initiating LED lighting upgrades in 2018, the airport has converted over 65,000 luminaires to LED, saving approximately 3 million kWh of energy in 2023. Additionally, the airport has implemented various innovative technologies and operational procedures, such as optimized HVAC management, smart-metering for electricity and water, and investments in sustainable building solutions, earning the Global Sustainability Assessment System Design & Build (GSAS-D&B) 4-Star certifications from the Gulf Organisation for Research & Development (GORD).
Committed to minimizing its ecological footprint, Hamad International Airport has implemented advanced waste management strategies with notable success. From April 2023 to March 2024, 81% of the airport’s waste was reused, recycled, or converted into energy, one of the highest rates in the industry. This includes over 1,000 tonnes of segregated plastic waste, thanks to streamlined sorting and collection systems, clear signage, and user-friendly infrastructure.
The airport has partnered with local waste management facilities to divert waste from landfills. Notably, in collaboration with the Ministry of Municipality, the airport diverted mixed general waste to the Domestic Solid Waste Management Centre, achieving a 48% diversion rate and redirecting over 18,000 tonnes of waste from April 2023 to March 2024.
Hamad International Airport also actively composts organic waste, transforming food scraps and other organic materials into nutrient-rich fertilizer for landscaping. The airport is exploring the recycling of dry sludge for bio soil production and the conversion of food waste into grey waste for further recycling.
Hamad International Airport exemplifies responsible water management by using 100% Treated Sewage Effluent (TSE) for irrigation through its advanced wastewater treatment plant. From April 2023 to March 2024, the airport treated over 3 million cubic meters of sewage for irrigation, preserving valuable freshwater resources and underscoring its commitment to sustainable operations.
Hamad International Airport has retained its environmental accreditations, including Airport Carbon Accreditation at Level 3 from the Airport Council International (ACI) and the Environmental Management System (ISO 14001) Certification from the British Standards Institution (BSI).
Hamad International Airport is dedicated to advancing environmental stewardship through collaborative initiatives with airlines, ground handling companies, and various stakeholders in the aviation industry. In its ongoing efforts to promote sustainability, the airport is spearheading trials of innovative initiatives aimed at minimizing waste and maximizing resource efficiency.
