What will Oregon look like in 80 years?
An interactive map from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration gives viewers a glimpse into the future if temperatures continue to rise across the globe, melting sea ice and causing oceans to rise.
According to a 2022 report from the agency, sea level is expected to rise along the United States coastline by about 2 feet by the end of this century due to human-caused climate change.
“Failing to curb future emissions could cause an additional 1.5 to 5 feet,” the report found.
NOAA’s interactive map shows exactly what that would mean to Oregon, even in places that aren’t adjacent to the ocean.

A 6-foot rise in sea level would submerge islands in the Columbia River and encroach upon the homes of people living near the river. For example, much of Sauvie Island would be underwater.
Along the coast, the damage would be extensive. Places like Warrenton, Seaside and Toledo would also be unrecognizable and mostly immersed in water.
