OSWEGO COUNTY – A group of students from Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Junior-Senior High School’s NASA Club recently attended the Northeast Mid-Atlantic GLOBE Student Symposium, which is run by NASA, NOAA and other organizations.
The club traveled to the Berks Nature Center in Reading, PA for the event, where they presented their research on water quality in both Onondaga and Oswego Counties.
The students presented data that favored Oswego County’s water quality. NASA Club advisor Jessica Halsey explained how they came to this conclusion. “Each month students went to four different rivers; Salmon, Oswego, Seneca and Oneida,” she said. “They took different water quality measurements to compare each county.”
According to the Berks Nature Center website, “Seventy-five students from nine schools across the Northeast/Mid-Atlantic region (which includes Delaware, Washington D.C., Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia) gathered at The Nature Place to present, in poster presentation format, and celebrate their hard-earned data collection and analysis.”
Out of the large group of participants, APW NASA club’s research was recognized as one of the top two high school projects at the symposium; an incredible honor among young environmental scientists.
Meanwhile, APW middle schoolers were busy conducting their own research on cloud formations in Oswego County. They presented their findings virtually to a panel of NASA scientists who provided feedback and posed questions about their work.
